Princess lost litter

we recently bred thunder and pincess again, we had a bad time with princess on this litter. i had her xray done and could only tell one pup but my vet said that it was a big one and there still could be more than one. well it turned out that it was just one and he was so big he got stuck in princess birth canal. to make a long story short by the time we got her to the vet we had lost the little guy. princess had other complications along with that but after major surgery she is recovering, but we can no longer use her for breeding. what a disaster that was. however one of the vets assistants has a female in heat right now and after seeing our beautiful big boy (thunder) with the gentle disposition inquired about studding him out. we will see where this leads us but hopefully we can work something out. in the mean time father time is moving on in thunders life and i need to think about the possibility of adding another female because it will be 2 years before we can breed a new addition. so depending on what the family says it could go either way. maybe i should just start showing thunder as every one i know that has a mastiff says he belongs in the show ring. i have put that off because it is so time consuming and really it is in my humble opinion overated. .... to be continued

This photo taken 2 days ago outside our backyard in the kennel together with my 3 year old son and Mike. Princess and Thunder are both 2 years old, i think just one week apart. At the left is Princess our female brindle and at the right is Thunder, our male fawn mastiff.

The word mastiff has several possible origins, with lexicography suggesting that it comes from the latin words massivus, meaning massive, or mastinus, meaning house dog. Another possibility is that it is derived from the Latin word mansuetus, meaning tame or gentle, a surprising origin given this breed's history as a fighter and warrior. Yet, the mastiff is indeed protective and gentle with its family, a result of centuries of service as a guardian of the home. The mastiff is entirely worthy of the sobriquet "gentle giant", for it is good natured and kind to all, save those who threaten its home and love ones.

Giant dogs are distinguished by their massive size - a result of increased bone growth - heavy skulls, huge paws, and thick, loose, wrinkled skin, which on the face produces the characteristic scowl that enhances their reputation as dogs to be reckoned with. The smooth coat and loose skin play a protective role as well, precluding enemies from grasping and holding them.

The early Mastiff was known as a molosser or molossus. At that time, the science of genetics and the concept of breeding for type were unknown, and the molosser was no doubt quite different from the Mastiff we know today, which has been bred in its present form for less than two centuries. It was enough, then, that a dog be capable of fulfilling its purpose, whether that was guarding, hunting or fighting.

Princess (female mastiff)

Princess Peaches and Cream, that's what we name for her. A female mastiff (brindle). She is 2 years old. She is 28 1/2 inches at the shoulder and weighs in at 170lbs. She is very sweet. She is much more protective than Thunder. More of a natural guardian. Yet, she is still very easy to handle and very good around our children.

Thunder (male mastiff)

Thunder Rogue is our male mastiff (Fawn). He is 2 years old. He is 32 inches at the shoulder and weighes more than 190 lbs. He is very gentle and easy to handle. They love people but it takes a while before they calm down. They need to be around a lot of people and other dogs when they are young.
